First Draft for Evaluation

Q1: in what ways does your media product (music magazine) use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of a real media products?

 My music magazine Origin develops and challenges forms and conventions of real media magazines as my front cover follows the conventions. An example of this is my case studies of B&S and Q magazine. The photography taken on my magazine is similar to B&S magazine as they are both taken by a medium shot.  The cover lines were bold and clear just like the cover lines in Q magazines front cover. I mostly used the colour white for the cover lines as on Q magazine that’s what stood out on the cover. In the same way the cover star for my magazine was a male just like B&S magazine. The props were simple but effective. I challenged the conventions of the cover lines by including the page number that relates to the cover line. I did this because I thought it would be quick for my audience to find the main features by having page numbers on the front cover.

For the contents page I had a combination of both B&S and Q magazine. I included an editor’s note and split the page into two columns just like B&S magazine and the photography for the contents page and the layout of the images are similar to Q magazine with the page numbers on top of the images in bold.

For the double page spread I followed the conventions of having a bold title and have my cover star on one page as well as having a pull quote within the text.

In general I challenged Q magazine layout as the magazine is always filled with content and looks busy but I went with B&S magazine and kept the front cover especially simple and clear to read as I thought this would be better for my audience.

Q2: how does your media product represent particular social groups?

My social groups for Origin magazine are young adults (aged 16-26) of both genders (mainly men) who are located in the UK (and maybe USA). They have an interest in the genre Soul/R&B (mostly African-American people). They are also into UK and US artists as well as American music. The genre soul can be shown through the images on the DPS where the cover star is holding a guitar; the prop of the guitar can be classed as an ionic signifier as it is a typical instrument in Soul music. The people in the images of the magazine are mainly African-American ethnicities. The back story of the journalism can link to the social group/target audience of Origin magazine (young person living in the UK wanting to be an artist). I think I have reinforced stereotypes of Soul/R&B of the target audience for the genre being black people but it is enjoyed by other ethnicities today. I have also challenged the stereotype of selling an R&B/Soul magazine in the UK as the people in the UK may not be interested in the common American genre and artists involved in Soul/R&B.

Q3: what kind of media institution might distribute your media product (music magazine) and why?

I think that Conde Nast Publications would publish and distribute my magazine because it is a UK and US based whom I think would be good for the target audience of Origin magazine to notice the magazine as the age limit for the publication is at least 16 years. I think that R&B/Soul has a particular interest. This is good because Conde Nast focuses on particular interest genres such as such as fashion and lifestyle, home, bridal, food travel, technology and many more. The publications pubished by Conde Nast do not have a genre of music. This is an advantage to Origin magazine as it can be the first music magazine to be published on Conde Nast. I think that the branding of the magazine links to the organisation because Conde Nast has all the latest technology to access magazines today. The existing publications published by Conde Nast has a mobile app, iPad edition, subscription, media pack, events and social networking sites linking to the magazine all there by a click of a button. This would be ideal to my target audience (young adults) as they tend use technology all the time; it would be a great way for the audience to access Origin magazine through their technologies.

Q4: who would be the audience for your media product (music magazine)?

The audience for Origin magazine would be 60% male and 40% female aged 16-26. The median age would be 21/22. Their musical taste would be Soul/R&B (mostly interested in US music/artists but also some UK artists). The location of the audience would be in the UK, London. The social class of my audience would be middle/working class. The main ethnicity would be African-American people but still other ranges of ethnicities.

Q5: how did you attract/address your audience?

I attracted the audience by having a strong colour scheme and house style for Origin magazine. The audiences said "successful colour choice... A simple but effective layout". "Great colour scheme and layout". I feel that having a strong colour scheme would attract the audience to remember Origin by the colours yellow, grey and black. Just as my case study, Q magazine is known from the strong colour scheme red, black and white (which relates to their genre rock).

In the same way I think I attracted my audience by the photography of the magazine. The audience specifically liked the photo with the rain drop effect. I did this to make the photo look more aesthetic to the audience. I did this by editing all the photos in Origin magazine on PhotoShop.

Q6: what have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

I’ve used many technologies to construct Origin magazine such as: Photoshop (FC and editing photos). I’ve learnt how to edit photos better by using the patch tool and I’ve learnt how to get a stroke on text and make it thicker. InDesign (CP and DPS) I’ve learnt to use the layers properly as this helped on the construction of the CP and DPS especially when I want text to go on top of images. Illustrator (logo) I had an induction from a teacher on how to get familiar with the software. It’s quite similar to InDesign, blogger to post the progress made on the magazine, I’ve learnt how to upload videos and prezi onto my blogger by using the html, slideshares to help plan Origin magazine, timetoast to show a timeline of the schedule of the coursework, prezi. To improve the photography of the magazine I used the Nikon D7000 camera in the studio to take professional photos. I had an induction on how to use the studio and how to use the camera, it was very useful. The soft boxes were a big help to get the lighting right for the pictures. For location photography I used the Canon PowerShot SD950 IS.

Q7: looking back at the preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?

From the preliminary task I had 3 developments which are one, to use professional photography for the images by using a better camera and using a studio as this would make the images of the magazine professional and less blurry. I achieved this because I was able to use the studio to get professional photos as I also had an induction on how to use it.  Two, using creative cover lines such as teasers which would attract the audience to want to read the magazine by using language devices such as rhetorical questions and puns; I achieved this because the journalism for the DPS I included mannerism to make the information less formal and interesting as I think it would attract my audience. and three, to continue to develop my Photoshop and InDesign skills to make the outcome of the magazine even better by watching YouTube videos of how to use the software tools and getting help in class. I achieved this by playing around with the software’s and when I got stuck I searched it to see any possible answers.

During christmas I done a word document draft of the evaluation on the completed magazine, Origin. There is still a lot more to write but I just dotted the main ideas.I'll soon upload a plan of what technologies I would consider using for the 7 questions.

Completed Journalism for Origin

Tyrell martin is a 17 year old aspiring artist with his unique Soulful/R&B music. He is a full time student living in hackney but in the last month his life has transformed with a million YouTube views of his new track featuring Leona Lewis. Is he ready for the big time?!

1.       Let’s start off by asking what inspires your music?

That’s hard to say, I don’t really have one, I respect and listen to all genres and enjoy them. I feel that I’ll learn more about music if I listen to different types of songs. If I had to pick one style, it may have to be R&B since I’ve been listening to R&B music since I was younger. Artists like Eminem he’s that kind of guy that doesn’t care about what he says and the way he raps is just unbelievable (with passionate expression).

2.       Do you have a favourite song that you can’t stop listening to repeatedly?

Hmm, probably right now it would be Royals by Lorded because it talks a lot about how people self-indulge themselves with expensive things and her opinion about where she lives. She inspires me to write my songs on what I feel strong about. You should listen to it sometime (smirks).

3.       Is it true you’re in college? What are you studying?

Yeah I go to Brit School, studying music; just focusing on college for now. In my spare time I write my own songs for fun. I guess music is like a hobby I’d like to never stop doing. This is why I go to Brit school… To somehow pursue a life in the music industry.

4.       How does it feel to be recognised today because of the X Factor winner Leona Lewis in 2006, how did you guys meet?

(Face lights up) ahhh yes… I was in college one day when Leona Lewis randomly just appeared in Brits to visit. She used to go there when she was younger. I completely forgot that she used to go here and luckily my performance was during the lesson she was visiting and she was so in love with my performance! After lesson she gave me advice saying I should take this seriously as a career. So I told her about the music video I was currently doing and asked if she could be featured in it… and she said “yeah why not?”! It was like a dream come true! We recorded her singing a short verse for my song in her recording studio the following week.

5.       What did you do once your music video was complete?

Well I obviously uploaded it onto my YouTube channel (Official Tyrell M of course) and that’s when the views started rolling in. In one day I had 5000 views… just yesterday I reached 1 million views! All because Leona featured in the song for only 30 seconds! I feel blessed to have had this opportunity! And now every time I’m out with my friends people recognise me and my fan base is expanding.

6.       Would you consider going onto X Factor next year to get a contract and be recognised more since Leona herself did this 6 years ago?

Umm good question…. X factor is a big deal in the UK. If it wasn’t for my recent success I would have considered it since Leona did it and won the show and look how amazing her career has been. However I’m hoping to get signed up soon. There has been an interest.

7.       I see your guitar is next to you, do you play the guitar when you write songs?

Yes, I've been playing the guitar since I was 10. My parents use to hate the noises I first started playing (looks reluctant). I feel that playing the guitar while writing my own songs helps me to think as it helps to make the song I'm creating flow.

8.       What do you have planned for the year 2014?

Since my song Cry featuring Leona Lewis is a success on YouTube. Leona is inviting me to one of her performances next summer to play my Song LIVE. Which is something to look forward to, but I'm still going to concentrate in Brit School and take as much as I can from it; with any luck I will be a Soulful/R&B artist in the next 5 years.

Now I can place this onto InDesign and my DPS for Origin will be complete.

Deadline Tomorrow...

Tomorrow is the final deadline for the magazine. I have completed the front cover and contents page for Origin magazine. I now need to get the journalism for the double page spread completed so I can place it onto InDesign as my final for the DPS; and consider what pull quotes I would need for the DPS. I would like to change the main coverline to something more catchy on the FC. Hopefully I will have my FINAL music magazine uploaded by the end of the day tomorrow.

Feedback on First Completed Draft of Origin Magazine

Yesterday I showed the class (my audience) my first draft of Origin magazine.

People said for the

 Front Cover - the main cover line needs a brighter outline to stand out against the image and move down "sneak peak" cover line slightly down and include the price.

Contents Page - add more contents such as listings to features and add page numbers.

Double Page Spread - main image has been stretched so I should place it again, I should also add page numbers and to not centre the pull quote.

Overall there was a lot of positive feedback. The images and layout were praised and of a high standard.

I will take into consideration of what they said and improve the magazine.

I started producing the double page spread for Origin Magazine. I placed the images from the photo shoot, I placed the Origin logo, started adding texts and quotes. I still need to finish adding the text into In Design and add pull quotes. Then I'll think I'll be done.

to be honest now I think about it I’m still contemplating on being an a soulful and rob artist at my age I feel that I’m too young but my inspiration is Eminem has that kind of guy who doesn’t care about what he says and the way he raps is just unbelievable.

 

4.       What do you do now?

I go college in east London and I’m doing level 3 extended diploma (biology, chemistry, physics) and music certificate but music wise not so much, just focusing on college for now. In my spare time I write my own songs for fun. I guess music is like a hobby I’d like to never stop doing.

 

5.       Would you consider going onto x factor next year to be recognised more?

Umm not now, maybe later on in the years when I feel that my voice is to its full potential vocally. X factor is a big deal in the up. I will consider it.

7.       What do you want to achieve musically if there are any?

 I’ve just finished recording my music video it’s now on YouTube, visit my channel Tyrell martin. I feel that if I get a lot of views and likes it would be an encouraging push to peruse into being a soulful/rob artist.

 

8.       Where do you see yourself in the next 5 years in the music industry?

Don’t know, I’ll wait and see on what will happen after I finish college. If anything I want to be signed to a label in the UK and if I’m lucky start to create my first album. I always have a backup plan if music is not for me.

 

This is definitely not my finalised piece of journalism. I still need to think about an interesting back story for the article. I'm still going to put it into In Design so I know where it is going to be placed.

Work in Progress CP 3...

I started the contents page of Origin magazine again. I did this because the layers on In Design made constructing the magazine complicated and difficult. Once I done the contents page again by organising the layers (by naming the layers background, text & images), it was easy to construct the magazine.

I added more information for the contents and added my logo on the page, also I started to write my editors note.

I still need to add 2 more images onto the page as well as finish writing up the contents page and write up more for the features page.
