Draft Journalism for Origin magazine 1

TYRELL MARTIN IS A 17 YEAR OLD ASPIRING TO BE AN UPCOMING ARTIST WHO ENJOYS MUSIC. HE IS IN FULL TIME EDUCATION BUT WANTING TO BRANCH OUT INTO THE MUSIC INDUSTRY AS A MALE SOULFUL AND R&B ARTIST. IS HE READY?!

1.       Let’s start of by asking what is your favourite music genre?

That’s hard to say, I don’t really have one I respect and listen to all genre and enjoy it. I feel that I’ll learn more about music if I listen to different types of songs. On the other hand it may have to be rob since I’ve been listening to rob music since I was younger.

2.       Do you have a favourite song that you can’t stop listening to repeatedly?

Hamm, probably right now it would be royals by lorded because it talks a lot about how people self-indulge themselves with expensive things and her opinion about where she lives. She stimulates me to write my songs on what I feel strong about. You should listen to it sometime.

3.       What inspired you to want to be a soulful artist/musician and who is your inspiration?

to be honest now I think about it I’m still contemplating on being an a soulful and rob artist at my age I feel that I’m too young but my inspiration is Eminem has that kind of guy who doesn’t care about what he says and the way he raps is just unbelievable.

4.       What do you do now?

I go college in east London and I’m doing level 3 extended diploma (biology, chemistry, physics) and music certificate but music wise not so much, just focusing on college for now. In my spare time I write my own songs for fun. I guess music is like a hobby I’d like to never stop doing.

5.       Would you consider going onto x factor next year to be recognised more?

Umm not now, maybe later on in the years when I feel that my voice is to its full potential vocally. X factor is a big deal in the up. I will consider it.

6.       I see your guitar is next to you, do you play the guitar when you write songs?

Yes, I’ve been playing the guitar since I was 10. I feel that playing the guitar while I write my own songs helps me to think as it helps to make the song I’m creating flow.

7.       What do you want to achieve musically if there are any?

I’ve just finished recording my music video it’s now on YouTube, visit my channel Tyrell martin. I feel that if I get a lot of views and likes it would be an encouraging push to peruse into being a soulful/rob artist.

8.       Where do you see yourself in the next 5 years in the music industry?

Don’t know, I’ll wait and see on what will happen after I finish college. If anything I want to be signed to a label in the UK and if I’m lucky start to create my first album. I always have a backup plan if music is not for me.

This is definitely not my finalised piece of journalism. I still need to think about an interesting back story for the article. I'm still going to put it into In Design so I know where it is going to be placed.

Photography Call Sheet 3

I hope that I will be able to get a guitar for the photo shoot tomorrow.

Work in Progress CP 3...

I started the contents page of Origin magazine again. I did this because the layers on In Design made constructing the magazine complicated and difficult. Once I done the contents page again by organising the layers (by naming the layers background, text & images), it was easy to construct the magazine.
I added more information for the contents and added my logo on the page, also I started to write my editors note.
I still need to add 2 more images onto the page as well as finish writing up the contents page and write up more for the features page.

Work in Progress CP 2...

I continued to add the information for the contents page and made the font smaller by size 14 and 12 as I thought there would have to be a lot of content in the magazine. I placed one of my location photography I did the other day. I still need to finish adding information on the contents and place the rest of the pictures and do the editors note.
Constructing the magazine is taking longer than I thought and the deadline is getting close so I need to work fast.

Work In Progress CP 1...

I started constructing the contents page for Origin magazine. I started adding images from the photo shoot and started listing the regulars. I still have to do location photography to add the images to the contents page and do the editors note. In the same way I need to create a logo for Origin magazine to put on the corner of the pages so the audience will remember that it is an Origin magazine.

Editing Photos for Origin Magazine

Added rain effects

Made a vintage effect

I edited both these images on Photoshop. I used www.photoshopessentials.com as there was a guide to achieve the look of the photos; to help me edit the photos to make them look more interesting. I would possibly use them for Origin magazine for the contents page.

Second Photo Shoot

Yesterday I had my second photo shoot using the black backdrop for Origin Magazine.

Set for the photo shoot
Call Sheet
The photo shoot did not go to plan as I wasn't able to get the props (guitar & microphone) for the models. I improvised by using a white umbrella as a prop for my female model. This would link to one of my cover lines, 'sneak peek: Alicia Keys New Album Photos'. However I had to cancel my male model (cover star) photo shoot as there was no alternative idea. I would have to reschedule another photo shoot due to this and make sure I booked the prop in advance. On the plus side the images came out great and I will choose the best one and use it for my contents page.

Photography Call Sheet 2

I have my second photo shoot tomorrow at 3:10pm in the Studio. I hope everything goes to plan and the pictures come out good.

Working in Progress FC 3...

I edited the image to make it brighter by going to Image>Adjustments>Brightness/Contrast. This allowed me to increase the brightness of the image so there are no dark shades on the picture. I then started to add other cover lines using the font Rockwell and changed the font of the skyline also to Rockwell.
To continue I will think of more creative cover lines to go on the cover to attract my target audience. I will also try to get the masthead to go behind the cover star using the eraser tool.

Work In Progress FC 2...

I have made progress on the magazine. I placed the image of my cover star on Photoshop and I have placed a bar code and QR code that takes you directly to my media blog. I didn't like how the masthead I created on Illustrator looked with the image so I decided to make the masthead directly on Photoshop. I used the blending options to make the masthead and main cover line stand out.
To continue my progress I will add the rest over the cover lines and add a puff. I may also consider doing another photo shoot with just a white background to see which background looks better (grey or white).

First Photo Shoot

Last week Thursday I done my first photo shoot in the studio (using the white back drop) for Origin magazine.

Set for the photo shoot
I positioned the 2 of the soft boxes away from the background to create a grey background for the photos.

Call Sheet
My model was a male.I took loads of photos so that I would have a variety of pictures to choose from. I am now going to choose the best images for the front cover and contents page as this is my cover star.

Work in Progress FC 1 ...

Started producing the front cover for Origin magazine. This is what I have done so far. I have placed the masthead, skyline, pricing and date. I hope to put the image of my cover star on the page so I can put the cover lines on.

Masthead for Origin Magazine

This is the masthead I'll be using for my music magazine. Now I can start to produce the front cover, contents page and double page spread.

Plan for Origin Magazine

This week I have been planning the layout of Origin magazine. It took some time as I had to think about where I would want to place images and text for the front cover, contents page and double page spread.

Front Cover

Contents Page

Double Page Spread

There may be a few changes to the plan when I start to make Origin magazine next week.

CMYK for Origin Magazine Colour Scheme

I thought finding the CMYK for Origin magazine colour scheme (grey, yellow and black) would be useful as it would be easier to find the colour I want when I start producing the magazine on PhotoShop and InDesign. I thought that this would be a common problem for me during making the magazine as I would forget the specific shade I would need.
I will now use the CMYK code for the colours to finalise my masthead of Origin magazine.

Photography Call Sheet 1

This week I have been trying to organise photo shoots for Origin magazine. I have been looking for potential models who would be great for Origin magazine. I have finally got my main cover star model ready. My first shoot is tomorrow from 11:40am.

I hope everything goes to plan and that the photos come out as I imagined it.

Audience Feedback on Origin Magazine Proposal

Illustrator Induction

Today I had an Illustrator induction on how to use the software to create mastheads and titles for my music magazine.

The outcome of exploring Illustrator

I used the type tool to type 'Origin'. To get the black and yellow outline I used the stroke tool and I could increase the stroke to a higher pt. I used the colours yellow, black and grey as this is my colour scheme for Origin magazine. I then was able to use the type tool to type 'contents' and right clicked the text to 'create outlines' this allowed me to move the text closer to each other.  I then used the brushes tool and started searching for interesting things and ended up using the border around Origin and then I was able to use the border as a paint brush tool to draw and write something.
Illustrator is not as hard as I thought it would be, it is just like Photoshop and InDesign.

Photography Induction

In today's lesson I had a photography induction in the studio.
These are the points i had during the session...

  • There are only white, black and grey backgrounds for the photos.
  • There is a trinity flash light for different lighting mechanisms.
  • There is a soft box, used to soften the lights (diffuses) creating no shadows.
  • Soft boxes has numbers for how strong the flash will be (1.0 is the lowest and 6.0 is the highest number)
  • There is a reflector (in gold (creates a warm tone), silver (creates harsher tones)).
  • Always make sure the room lights are off so the focus can be on the model.
  • The camera would be a Nikon D7000 - always look through the view finder.
  • On the camera there is a god ox (acts as remote control) it connects to the trinity flash lights and soft boxes.
  • Use the lens on the camera to zoom in or zoom out.
  • Hold the camera button to keep image in focus.
  • There are 2 options on the camera A for Aperture which is used for detailed photos and S stands for Shutter Speed used for fast movement photos.
I have two photos that I would like to use as inspiration for my main cover star and double page spread. I haven't thought of any photos for the contents page yet.

Front Cover image inspiration

I like the pose and props used in this image of Usher (hat and leather jacket). My cover star is most likely to be a male.
Double Page Spread image inspiration
I like the pose of Bruno Mars in this picture. I would consider this pose for my double page spread.
